Juliet Mitchell

Juliet Mitchell FBA is an author, psychoanalyst, socialist feminist and emeritus professor.

Her work changed the landscape of both feminist thought and psychoanalytic theory, and has remained at the heart of critical thinking for over 50 years.

Her many books, including Women: The Longest Revolution, Siblings: Sex and Violence, and, most recently, Fratriarchy, continue to shape our understanding of both feminism and psychoanalysis, and have been translated into more than 20 languages. New editions of two of her seminal works – Psychoanalysis & Feminism and Woman’s Estate – will be published in 2025. She is currently writing a book on Louise Bourgeois.

She is Emeritus Professor at the Universities of Cambridge and London, and the Founder Director of the Centre for Gender Studies in the University of Cambridge. She is a Fellow of both the British Academy and the International Psychoanalytical Association, and an Honorary Fellow of the University of Metz-Lorraine (France).
